What We Do
Food Security
55.5% (30.3 million people) of the South African population are living in poverty.
Skills Development
Homelessness involves factors such as unemployment and substance abuse.
Housing
Housing is considered the best practice for addressing homelessness.
Food Security
YMFA has provided approximately 160 meals to the homeless community who are hit the hardest by poverty. We provide nutritious food, grocery packs to fulfil basic needs of the vulnerable. With growth, we strive to consistently reach more families and individuals in need of nutritious food and spread our efforts throughout Africa.
Skills Development
Covid-19 has exacerbated the effects of homelessness and continued to extend the gap. So add effects of homelessness. In our walk to help reduce the extent of substance abuse, we have partnered with Hope for the Hopeless, an organisation with a track-record in helping change the narrative of substance abuse among young people through skills development, prevention treatment referrals among other things. We have given meals and had talks with individuals living in the streets and suffering from substance abuse.
We hold a vision to incorporate sustainable projects such as vegetable farming, sewing, art and crafts into our Home of Hope and Upliftment to allow them to live an independent and sustainable life.
Housing
Through a long term commitment to alleviate homelessness, we strive to the best of our capacity, to build a bridge that connects homeless individuals to proper housing and shelter. This commitment will be achieved through building homes for people living in inadequate housing.
Through our efforts, we have served approximately 160 individuals who are without shelter. The group of people include women, children and men and we are aware of how each one of them is affected by homelessness differently. We continue to lend our ears to their stories of hopelessness and discouragement to establish a Home of Hope and Upliftment.
Our Projects
Makgwaraneng Primary School
Mpuseng attended Makgwaraneng Primary School and was exposed to the gap of educational equality and lack of educational resources experienced by her fellow school mates. She strived for our school shoes initiative to start at home and that’s what we did.
We were able to provide 87 school shoes in partnership with Marang Foundation to try and close the gap and give a little bit of hope back home. We strive to continue with this amazing initative and reach more schools with more resources.
MES Community Orphanage
YMFA team saw a need to provide the gift of warmth to those who needed it most during the cold winter. We visited MES Community Orphanage; MES provides shelter to young people who are without a home. We provided 70 blankets and spent time with the young people conversing and listening and sharing stories of hope.
Kwa-Mai Mai Fire
The community of Kwa-Mai Mai experienced a fire that left hundreds of families homeless. More than 400 homes in the informal settlement were affected and lost all their belongings. We immediately saw a need to respond and attend to the community of Kwa-Mai Mai with essentials. We provided clothes and food to the Kwa-Mai Mai community. People living in informal settlement always run the risk of being affected by fires and such instances require immediate response and for us to ACT NOW!
Skougronde Homeless Settlement
YMFA had its very first successful project in Pretoria where 60 meals were provided to the Skougronde homeless community. The community consists of women and children who don’t have access to proper shelter and live in tents. They are faced with lack of necessities every day and a day of food relief brought hope to the community.
We encourage you to get involved in these amazing initiatives we have ahead so we can continue to reach more communities, impact, and change more lives.
